The Primary Years Programme

Welcome to the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

Kowloon Junior School is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). The PYP is designed for students aged 3 to 12 and focuses on developing young students as active participants in a lifelong journey of learning.

The PYP provides an innovative and engaging curriculum that encourages students to explore and understand the world around them. The PYP is based on the recognition of a child’s natural curiosity, creativity and ability to reflect. It generates a stimulating, challenging learning environment to nurture the whole child and foster a lifelong love of learning for all. The program integrates multiple subjects into a cohesive learning model, fostering deeper understanding through inquiry-based education. Developed from extensive educational research and the collective experiences of IB World Schools, the PYP is recognized globally for setting the standard in preparing young learners for the dynamic, ever-evolving future. It effectively addresses the needs and challenges of today's students, making it a leading choice in contemporary education.

Below you will find detailed insights into the core components of the PYP and how it benefits the development of your child.

What is the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)?

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a transformative experience for young learners, emphasising the development of the whole child as an inquirer both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, as well as transdisciplinary skills, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry.

Inquiry
At the heart of the PYP is inquiry-based learning. This approach encourages students to ask questions, explore, and interact with the environment around them, which naturally leads to a deeper understanding of the subjects they are studying. Inquiry is embedded in all aspects of the curriculum, making learning engaging and relevant.

Agency
In the PYP, students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning. The concept of agency empowers students to voice their opinions, make choices, and take responsibility for their educational and personal growth. This active engagement enhances both their learning experiences and their personal development.

Learner Profile
The Learner Profile describes a list of attributes that promote academic excellence and personal growth. The ten qualities of the Learner Profile are: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective. These attributes aim to develop internationally minded individuals who help to create a better and more peaceful world.

Programme of Inquiry
The Programme of Inquiry (POI) is a comprehensive, thematic framework that organises the six transdisciplinary themes that students explore throughout their time in the PYP. These themes are central to the curriculum and ensure a coherent, structured academic experience that is globally relevant.

The transdisciplinary themes explored by KJS Learners are:

  • Who we are
Inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; person, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
  • Where we are in place and time
Inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationship between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
  • How we express ourselves
Inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
  • How the world works
Inquiry into the natural world and its laws, the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
  • How we organise ourselves
Inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organisations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.
  • Sharing the planet
Inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and other living things; communities and the relationship within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.

Transdisciplinary
The PYP transcends traditional boundaries between subjects and integrates learning by exploring connections between them. This transdisciplinary approach helps students make sense of complex concepts and real-world issues, making learning meaningful and connected to their everyday lives.

Curriculum Areas
The six main curriculum areas in the PYP are Language, Social Studies, Mathematics, Arts, Science, and Personal, Social and Physical Education. Each area contributes to the transdisciplinary nature of the programme, helping to weave a rich tapestry of learning experiences.

Approaches to Learning (AtLs)
In the PYP, significant emphasis is placed on developing approaches to learning (AtLs) skills which include thinking skills, research skills, social skills, self-management skills, and communication skills. These skills help students manage their own learning and growth effectively.

Action
Action in the PYP is about students taking what they learn and choosing to make a difference in the world. Students are inspired to think about how they can apply their learning to real-life problems, reflecting on their agency and responsibility to act.

The Exhibition
In their final year, PYP students participate in the Exhibition, a significant research project that allows them to showcase the knowledge, concepts, and skills they have developed throughout their PYP experience. It is a culmination of their learning and an exciting opportunity to demonstrate their growth as learners and members of the global community.
We hope this provides a clear overview of the enriching educational experience your child will receive in the IB Primary Years Programme at Kowloon Junior School. We believe the PYP offers a unique, engaging, and deeply enriching educational pathway that prepares students not just academically, but as thoughtful, capable, and responsible global citizens.
