Physical Education
Welcome to Kowloon Junior School (KJS) Physical Education, where we offer a comprehensive and diverse physical education experience for our students. Physical Education (PE) at Kowloon Junior School focuses on helping students become confident movers able to transfer skills across a variety of activities. The programme aims to challenge and stretch students and encourage them to make mistakes and learn from them. Students have opportunities to learn about themselves and work with others as part of teams and collaborative groups.
We take great pride in our Extra-Curricular Activity (ECA) provision, catering to a wide range of interests offering a variety of sports for our students to choose from. Our PE department offers a full programme of events including athletics, cross-country, basketball, football, netball, tag-rugby, aquathon, cricket and more. We believe in nurturing our students' competitive spirit and fostering a love for sports. Our older students have the opportunity to engage in exciting competitive sporting events against other schools across Hong Kong, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship.
The Physical Education and ECA programme at KJS above all else aims to build students' confidence and competence to move and to motivate children to value and take responsibility for physical activity as an everyday part of their lives.
Expressive Arts
Music
Kowloon Junior School prides itself on offering a dynamic music program within the Expressive Arts Department that is rooted in the principles of the Primary Years Program. Our commitment to musical learning goes beyond developing technical skills; it aims to cultivate creativity, reflection, cultural appreciation, and global-mindedness in every student. By following the PYP Music Scope and Sequence, students at KJS engage in transdisciplinary learning experiences throughout their academic journey, spanning all six years at our school. From immersive year group singing lessons and opportunities to perform school assemblies to lively performances by our Ukulele Ensembles and specialized beginning and intermediate instrumental classes led by professional musicians, our students are encouraged to explore, create, and collaborate in a nurturing musical environment. The KJS Orchestra and Choir serve as focal points for students to exhibit their talents, embrace diverse musical traditions, and deepen their connection to the world around them. At Kowloon Junior School, music serves as a powerful tool for students to express themselves authentically, communicate effectively, and forge meaningful connections across various disciplines.
Drama
At KJS the students have access to a rich tapestry of Drama opportunities which allow them to express themselves. Regular lessons are provided to all students throughout the year and within these, creativity is key.
Students learn to use a range of dramatic conventions to communicate stories and messages to an audience. Skills in Drama are developed through playful retelling and roleplay in the vocal techniques and improvisation, through to collaborative work and devised plays in the upper school. Critical feedback plays an important role in Drama and students are encouraged to use self reflection and peer reflection as part of their learning.
There are a range of extra Drama activities open to students through their time at the school. These include Theatre Club productions which are offered as extra curricular activities, as well as group presentations, and also performance sessions with peer audiences.
Drama at KJS is a conduit to a deeper understanding of the skills and concepts being taught in school, with students making authentic connections through Drama as part of their inquiry learning.
Mandarin
We recognise that Chinese is the second language of our school and the language of our host country. We are committed to children achieving a high competence in Chinese.
Throughout their schooling, children are provided with learning opportunities appropriate to their level of ability and background in learning Chinese. Following the ESF wide outcome-based multi-pathway curriculum, our children are catered for in different groups and pathways. The three language Strands (Oral, Visual and Written) are taught through purposeful and engaging activities. Year 1 children have three 45-minute lessons per week; Year 2 children have four 45-minute lessons: Years 3 to 6 have daily lessons. As the children progress through the programme, they learn to communicate and interact in Chinese in a natural and unrehearsed manner with their teachers, classmates and the wider community.
Chinese language learning is further facilitated through the contribution of the Chinese teachers to the Programme of Inquiry. All teachers of Chinese will contribute to team teaching to promote learning through the language, professional collaboration, curriculum continuity and articulation. Children studying Chinese take an active role in their language learning. Since their participation is an integral part of each class, the children naturally take ownership of this language, which they are then able to use. Opportunities are provided so that students may enhance their communication and social skills, which are essential in their daily lives.
